Sri Lanka - Little Adam´s Peak

If you are really short of time to climb Adam´s Peak and explore Nuwara Eliya tea plantations, there is one thing you can do to substitute for both. And that is an easy hike to Little Adam´s Peak. It saves you two  days of your itinerary.

Little Adam´s Peak is located in Ella. It got it`s name after it`s big brother, the holy mountain Adam`s Peak, because of the similar shape. It is supposed to be a very popular hike, but surprisingly, we did not meet many people on our way (probably because of dark clouds accumulating above us). It is really very easy hike (we started in front of our hotel called Ella Flower Garden Resort (the picture above is from there). You walk among the tea plantations, and if you are lucky enough (we were not) you will also see teapickers along the way. We met some local kids who insisted on picture but asked for money afterwards (I guess I was not experienced travel photographer enough to see this coming).  The surroundings are spectacular, all the green hills! Once again I took hundred pictures of tea bushes :-).  It takes less than an hour to climb up and there are some stairs - climbing them we still felt the big Adam´s Peak in our legs. But it is not a challenging hike and it`s quite short, and gives you a good impression of the landscape around Ella and the view is fantastic. So absolutely worth the climb! 

There are actually two tops, and I am not sure which one is the right one. We got caught by heavy rain at the top, so we did not manage to explore both. We ran down the hill soaking wet and enjoyed the rest of the day relaxing in the restaurant. After dark, we went to explore the night life in Ella - we ended up having rotti with our guide in the local shop.

Ak nemáte dosť času liezť na Adamovu horu ani na objavovanie čajových plantáží v okolí Nuwara Eliya, je jedno miesto, ktoré vám nahradí oba tieto zážitky. A tým je Malá Adamova hora. To vám ušetrí dva dni z cestovného plánu.

Malá Adamova hora sa nachádza v Elle (kam sme sa doviezli vláčikom v minulej časti). Meno dostala po svojej veľkej sestre, svätej Adamovej hore, vďaka podobnému tvaru. Výstup na Malú Adamovu horu by mal byť celkom populárny medzi turistami, my sme však takmer nikoho nestretli (možno to bolo tým, že sa nám nad hlavami začali zaťahovať mračná). Cesta na vrchol je naozaj ľahká túra (my sme začali spred nášho hotela, to foto hore je odtiaľ). Kráčate pomedzi čajové plantáže, a pokiaľ máte šťastie (čo sme my nemali), uvidíte aj zberačky čaju. My sme stretli zopár miestnych detí, ktoré trvali na tom, aby som ich odfotila, a následne si za to vypýtali peniaze (zjavne nie som príliš scestovaná aby ma to neprekvapilo). Okolie je nádherné, všetky tie zelené kopce! Opäť som neoddolala a urobila asi sto fotiek čajových kríkov. Hore to trvá ani nie hodinu myslím, je tam aj pár schodov, na ktorých sme ešte pocítili výstup na tú skutočnú Adamovu horu. Ale nie je to nič náročné, a hlavne získate obraz o krajine v okolí Elly a výhľady sú krásne, takže rozhodne ten výšľap stojí za to! 

Vlastne sú tam vrcholy dva a ja neviem, ktorý z nich bol ten pravý. Lenže nás na vrchu zastihol hrozný lejak, takže ísť aj na ten druhý sme nestihli. Utekali sme dole premočení do nitky a zvyšok dňa sme strávili v hotelovej reštaurácii. Po zotmení sme šli objavovať nočný život v mestečku - nakoniec sme skončili spolu s naším sprievodcom na rotti v miestnom obchodíku.

Sri Lanka - Horton Plains

 

Our next stop in Sri Lanka road trip was Horton Plains National Park. We got up before 5 a.m. to get there at dawn - it is 32 km from Nuwara Eliya.  The early morning is really worth it. The dew and morning sun is a killer combo. And you can also see Adam´s Peak in the distance. NP Horton Plains in Ohiya is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. This plateau at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 metres is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. Horton Plains was designated a national park in 1988. During a very pleasant 3-hour hike you manage to visit the most popular place here - The World´s End, and also Little World´s End and Baker´s Falls. I especially loved the first part of our hike, the yellow-golden prairies, here and there with a taller tree and hills in the distance. The ground was red and bumpy. The World´s End was nice, but I think I like the little one even more. If you do not have enough time, I suggest you start the hike the opposite direction, so you will come to The Little World´s End first and then you can just turn around a leave to your next destination. It is important to arrive early in the morning, before 10 a.m., because after this time the fog starts over the World´s End and you won´t see anything from the views.

But remember, the Horton Plains is definitely a place you should not miss in Sri Lanka.

Našou ďaľšou zástavkou bol Národný park Hortonské pláne.  Vstávali sme ešte pred piatou ráno, aby sme tam boli na úsvite - z Nuwara Eliya je vzdialený 32 kilometrov. To skoré ráno sa skutočne oplatí. Ranná rosa a ranné slnko je osvedčená kombinácia. A dokonca je vidno aj Adamovu horu v diaľke. NP Hortonské pláne je chránená oblasť v strede Sri Lanky. Vo výške 2100 -2300 metrov sa nachádza platina s obrovskou biodiverzitou, a niektoré druhy rastlín sa vyskytujú len tu. Za národný park boli Hortonské pláne vyhlásené v roku 1988.

Počas veľmi príjemného trojhodinového okruhu stihnete navštíviť asi najpopulárnejšie miesto tohto parku, nazývaný Koniec sveta, ako aj Malý koniec sveta a Bakerove vodopády. Mne sa páčila prvá časť cesty, cez tie žltooranžové stepy, kde kde-tu vytŕčal strom a v diaľke sa dvíhali kopce. Zem bola červená a hrboľatá. Koniec sveta bol pekný, ale mne osobne sa možno ten Malý koniec sveta páčil ešte viac. Ak nemáte veľa času, začnite cestu opačne a choďte pozrieť Malý koniec sveta a môžte sa otočiť a ísť preč. Dôležité je prísť pred desiatou ráno, lebo potom už na Konci sveta padá hmla a zakryje vám výhľad. 

Hortonské pláne sú však miesto, ktoré rozhodne na Sri Lanke nevynechajte!

World´s End

Sri Lanka - Tea plantations, tea pickers and tea factory

If I had to choose only one thing to see in Sri Lanka, it would be tea plantations. It was love at first sight and if it was possible, I could stare at the tea fields for hours and days. The green colour of the tea bushes is incredible, it is that kind of fresh green you see in the spring, even more intense. It is because they collect the fresh tips from the bushes, so it grows fresh over and over. And if you see fields of this green all around you, is one of the best sights you can experience. So is seeing the tea pickers. This is done exclusively by women (or at least I have not seen any men doing it). Although, I have to say I was quite dissapointed with the bussiness around it, because you have to pay for pictures here too. I really wanted to document more of these people, but with the time given and driver who does not understand your needs, it was impossible.

If you are traveling around Sri Lanka, it is almost impossible not to stumble upon a tea plantation. Of course, if you are in a beach resort, the only tea leaves you see will be in your morning cup of tea. So if you can, take a day trip to the sri lankan mountains and wander around. The center point, surrounded by plantations, is a village called Nuwara Elyia. There are numerous tea factories all around this area.We have visited  two tea factories. Both visits were quite fast, it takes around 10-20 minutes to go through the factory. Then you are taken to the shop, where you can taste and buy the teas. I would recommened a tea factory called Pedro tea estate, which is growing tea for Mabroc tea brand. We brought home 16 packages of their loose tea as gifts, and I am looking forward to enjoy them more now during colder months.

Ak by som si mala vybrať len jedinú vec, ktorú by som na Sri Lanke chcela vidieť, boli by to čajové plantáže. U mňa to bola láska na prvý pohľad a ak by to bolo možné, pozerala by som na tie čajové polia hodiny a dni. Ten odtieň zelenej na čajových kríkoch je neuveriteľný, je to taká tá jarná svieža zelená, a ešte intenzívnejšia. Je to preto, lebo končeky kríkov sú neustále zbierané, a preto rastú stále svieže výhonky. A keď máte okolo seba celé polia tejto zelenej, je to jeden z najúchvatnejších pohľadov na  Zemi. Takisto aj pozorovať pri práci zberačky čaju. Robia to výlučne ženy (teda aspoň ja som žiadneho zberača nevidela). Aj keď tu musím byť kritická, pretože už aj z tohto sa stal biznis. Ak si chcete zberačky odfotiť, musíte zaplatiť. Veľmi som chcela poriadne zdokumentovať viac ľudí -zberačiek, ale pri našom časovom rozvrhu a hlavne so šoférom, ktorý vôbec nerozumel mojím požiadavkám, to nebolo možné.

Ak cestujete po Sri Lanke, je takmer nemožné nenaraziť na čajovú plantáž. Pravdaže ak vylihujete v rezorte pri mori, jediné čajové lístky čo uvidíte budú asi tie v raňajšom čaji. Takže ak môžte, naozaj sa vyberte na výlet do sri lanských kopcov a túlajte sa! Centrálnym miestom, kde je sústredených najviac čajových plantážía fabrík, je okolie Nuwara Elyia. My sme navštívili dve. Takáto návšteva nezabereie veľa času, prehliadka fabriky trvá 10-20 minút, a potom vás zoberú do obchodíku, kde môžte čaje ochutnať a zakúpiť si ich. Tu by som odporučila čajovú fabriku Pedro tea estate, ktorá pestuje čaje pre značku Mabroc. My sme si domov doniesli 16 krabičiek s voľne sypaným čajom ako darčeky, a teším sa, ako si ich budem vychutnávať viac v týchto chladných mesiacoch.

 

 

Sri Lanka - Adam´s Peak

Climbing Adam´s Peak is one of popular things to do in Sri Lanka. Some people will tell you it is not worth it, that the views are not that stunning and you have to climb the stairs for hours basically to see an average view, others will tell you it was amazing...When you are short of time, it is tough decision, because Adam´s Peak is situated in central Sri Lanka and it takes several hours to get from there to another interesting place. Well, i squeezed it in our itinerary just to be sure I will not be missing something :-). And so we went.

 Adam's Peak (also called Sri Pada or "butterfly mountain", is a 2,243 m (7,359 ft) tall mountain and a Buddhist pilgrimage site located in central Sri Lanka. It is well known for the Sri Pada, i.e., "sacred footprint",which in Buddhist tradition is held to be the footprint of the Buddha, in Hindu tradition that of Shiva and in Islamic and Christian tradition that of Adam. In Islamic tradition it is the site where Adam fell to earth.

We arrived in Nallathanniya (a village where most of the people start the climb) early in the evening. We went for a walk to see where to go at night (the climb starts around 2 a.m. so you can see the sunrise), but there was nothing much to see but shops selling funny furry caps (typical for Sri lankans), sweaters, jackets, gloves and colorful toys,  (it is cold up there on the top), so we returned quicly to our room and tried to get some rest before the climb.

We started the climb at 2:30 a.m.  The greater part of the track leading from the base to the summit consists of thousands of steps built in cement or rough stones. First, they are not that steep, but later the steps are higher and higher. By the time you reach the top, you are sweating like a pig and shivering from cold wind at the same time. You really need a good windproof jacket there. The trails are illuminated with electric light, so walking there at night is as easy as during the day. It was unbelievable how many people were on the trail, and how many locals were already climbing down in the middle of the night. And I am talking about really old and sick people too.

There are rest stops and wayside shops along the trails, which  serve refreshments and supplies. We stopped at the last one, 300 meters under the summit, and had some hot tea.

 After arriving to the top, we realized it is already packed with people, you could hardly move there. We managed to find a spot near the rails and waited. We waited for the sunrise as all the people around us. It took at least an hour in freezing cold until the sun appeared. Everybody was so excited! You could hear deep sights of excitement, it seemed to me like they never saw a sunrise before! I have to admit it was kind of funny for us. Truth is that sunrise itself is really an average, it must be the place, the atmosphere which excites people. And then there is the shadow. A perfect triangle shaped shadow of the Sri Pada mountain, which really is something worth to see. But you have to experience it with the whole climb to appreciate it. So if you ask me: I am happy I climbed it and did not miss this chance. But, to be clear, as it is common here, you actually will not see any footprint at the end.

Vystúpiť na vrchol Adamovej hory je pre turistov na Sri Lanke celkom populárna aktivita. Niektorí vám povedia, že to za tú námahu nestojí, výhľady sú podpriemerné na to, aby ste sa niekoľko hodín štverali po schodoch. Iní vám povedia, že je to nádhera. Ak máte málo času, je to naozaj ťažké rozhodnutie, pretože Adamova hora leží v centrálnej časti krajiny a prístup k nej, ale aj vzdialenosť od nej k ďalšiemu zaujímavému bodu zaberie niekoľko hodín (plus samozrejme čas na výstup a zostup). Nuž, ja som ten výstup nakoniec do nášho plánu vtesnala, pretože som sa bála, že o niečo prídem. A tak sme šli.

Adamova hora ätaktiež nazývaná Sri Pada alebo "motýlia hora" meria 2243 metrov a je to budhistické posvätné miesto. Je známe otlačkom nohy na vrchole hory, ktorá podľa budhistickej tradície patrí Buddhovi, podľa hinduistickej bohu Shiva, a podľa islamskej a kresťanskej patrí Adamovi. Podľa islamskej je to miesto, kde Adam dopadol na Zem.

Do dediny Nallathanniya (odtiaľ sa začína výstup) sme došli podvečer. Šli sme sa prejsť, aby sme videli, kam v noci pôjdeme (výstup sa začína tak okolo 2 ráno, aby ste mohli vidieť východ slnka), ale nie je tam veľa na pozeranie, je tam iba kopa obchodov (stánkov) s takými ich typickými čapicami -strašne smiešnymi) a teplým oblečením (pretože hore je zima) a všelijakými farebnými hračkami a gýčmi rôzneho druhu, takže sme sa vrátili do našej izby a snažili sa zaspať.

vyrazili sme o 2:30. Väčšia časť cesty pozostáva zo stoviek (ale asi aj tisíciek) schodov. najskôr nie sú príliš strmé, cesta začína tak pozvoľna, ale potom sú strmšie a vyššie. Kým sa vyškriabete na vrchol, ste spotený ako prasa a zároveň sa trasiete od zimy a chladného vetra. Hore naozaj potrebujete dobrú neprefúkavú bundu (v ideálnom prípade). Cesta je osvetlená, takže sa v noci ide bez problémov. Bolo neskutočné, koľko ľudí sa podujalo na túto púť, a koľko miestnych už v tom čase zostupovalo dole, a to hovorím aj o veľmi starých a chorých. Po ceste sú stánky s občerstvením na každom kroku, môžte oddychovať a posedieť si. My sme zastali v tom poslednom, 300 m pod vrcholom, a dali si teplý čaj.

Vrchol hory bol už plný ľudí, pomaly sa nedalo kam pohnúť. Podarilo sa nám získať miesto pri zábradlí, jedno z posledných. A čakali sme. Čakali sme na východ slnka. Trvalo to nekonečne dlho, pretože tam bola strašná zima a boli sme tam minimálne hodinu, keď konečne vykuklo. Všetci boli nadšení. Počuť bolo obdivné vzdychy a prejavy úžasu, akoby nikto z tých ľudí ešte východ slnka nevidel. Až nám to bolo smiešne. Pravda je, že ten východ bol naozaj priemerný, muselo to byť tým miestom a atmosférou, že to ľudí tak vzrušovalo. No a potom je tu ten tieň. Perfektný trojuholník, ktorý vrhá Adamova hora, to sa oplatí vidieť. Ale musíte si zažiť celý ten výstup, aby ste to ocenili. Takže, ak sa opýtate mňa, som rada, že som tam šla. Ale aby bolo jasné, v konečnom dôsledku žiadnu stopu, odtlačok nohy nikde neuvidíte.
