Sri Lanka - Train ride to Ella

 

Taking a train ride to or from Ella is often a part of itineraries for Sri Lanka travellers. It is the most scenic and beautiful way to travel across the hilly tea plantations and rice fields. You can travel all the  way from Kandy, but it takes 7 hours. We opted for a shorter route and started in Pattipola, the highest railway station in Sri Lanka. The trains are old and seats are wooden and hard, but that is a part of the whole experience. As it is a real Sri Lanka attraction, be prepared that trains are sometimes packed with tourists together with locals and it can be difficult to find a seat. Heavy rainfall started during our journey, and we could not close the windows as they were broken, so we have to stand in the corridor for part of the trip. We also could not see much from the scenery, which was supposed to be breathtaking, due to a heavy fog in some places. Nevertheless, it was still a nice ride.

Jazda vlakom z alebo do mestečka Ella je často súčasťou  cestovných plánov na Srí Lanke. Je to najscénickejšia a najkrajšia možnosť cestovať cez kopcovité čajové plantáže a ryžové polia. Môžte ju absolvovať celú až z Kandy, ale to trvá sedem hodín. My sme sa rozhodli pre kratšiu cestu a začali sme v Pattipola, najvyššie položenej stanici na Srí Lanke. Vlaky sú tu staré a sedadlá drevené čiže tvrdé, ale to je súčasť zážitku. A keďže to je skutočná srílanská atrakcia, rátajte s tým, že vlaky sú občas plné turistov aj domácich a môže byť ťažké si nájsť miesto na sedenie. Asi v polke cesty nám začalo veľmi liať, a okná sa nedali zavrieť, takže sme druhú časť prestáli v uličke (a nielen my). Takisto sme bohužiaľ kvôli pretrvávajúcej hmle a dažďu nevideli všetky tie sľubované krásne scenérie. Napriek tomu to bola stále krásna jazda.

Sri Lanka - Tea plantations, tea pickers and tea factory

If I had to choose only one thing to see in Sri Lanka, it would be tea plantations. It was love at first sight and if it was possible, I could stare at the tea fields for hours and days. The green colour of the tea bushes is incredible, it is that kind of fresh green you see in the spring, even more intense. It is because they collect the fresh tips from the bushes, so it grows fresh over and over. And if you see fields of this green all around you, is one of the best sights you can experience. So is seeing the tea pickers. This is done exclusively by women (or at least I have not seen any men doing it). Although, I have to say I was quite dissapointed with the bussiness around it, because you have to pay for pictures here too. I really wanted to document more of these people, but with the time given and driver who does not understand your needs, it was impossible.

If you are traveling around Sri Lanka, it is almost impossible not to stumble upon a tea plantation. Of course, if you are in a beach resort, the only tea leaves you see will be in your morning cup of tea. So if you can, take a day trip to the sri lankan mountains and wander around. The center point, surrounded by plantations, is a village called Nuwara Elyia. There are numerous tea factories all around this area.We have visited  two tea factories. Both visits were quite fast, it takes around 10-20 minutes to go through the factory. Then you are taken to the shop, where you can taste and buy the teas. I would recommened a tea factory called Pedro tea estate, which is growing tea for Mabroc tea brand. We brought home 16 packages of their loose tea as gifts, and I am looking forward to enjoy them more now during colder months.

Ak by som si mala vybrať len jedinú vec, ktorú by som na Sri Lanke chcela vidieť, boli by to čajové plantáže. U mňa to bola láska na prvý pohľad a ak by to bolo možné, pozerala by som na tie čajové polia hodiny a dni. Ten odtieň zelenej na čajových kríkoch je neuveriteľný, je to taká tá jarná svieža zelená, a ešte intenzívnejšia. Je to preto, lebo končeky kríkov sú neustále zbierané, a preto rastú stále svieže výhonky. A keď máte okolo seba celé polia tejto zelenej, je to jeden z najúchvatnejších pohľadov na  Zemi. Takisto aj pozorovať pri práci zberačky čaju. Robia to výlučne ženy (teda aspoň ja som žiadneho zberača nevidela). Aj keď tu musím byť kritická, pretože už aj z tohto sa stal biznis. Ak si chcete zberačky odfotiť, musíte zaplatiť. Veľmi som chcela poriadne zdokumentovať viac ľudí -zberačiek, ale pri našom časovom rozvrhu a hlavne so šoférom, ktorý vôbec nerozumel mojím požiadavkám, to nebolo možné.

Ak cestujete po Sri Lanke, je takmer nemožné nenaraziť na čajovú plantáž. Pravdaže ak vylihujete v rezorte pri mori, jediné čajové lístky čo uvidíte budú asi tie v raňajšom čaji. Takže ak môžte, naozaj sa vyberte na výlet do sri lanských kopcov a túlajte sa! Centrálnym miestom, kde je sústredených najviac čajových plantážía fabrík, je okolie Nuwara Elyia. My sme navštívili dve. Takáto návšteva nezabereie veľa času, prehliadka fabriky trvá 10-20 minút, a potom vás zoberú do obchodíku, kde môžte čaje ochutnať a zakúpiť si ich. Tu by som odporučila čajovú fabriku Pedro tea estate, ktorá pestuje čaje pre značku Mabroc. My sme si domov doniesli 16 krabičiek s voľne sypaným čajom ako darčeky, a teším sa, ako si ich budem vychutnávať viac v týchto chladných mesiacoch.

 

 

Young hearts run free

I have some wedding pictures for you after a long time.A beautiful young couple, my beloved volunteers from Hory a Mesto mountain film festival, asked me to be their wedding photographer so I was honoured to be there with them.We shot in a forest and vineyards near their home and it was crazy hot that day.The bride was stunning and the groom as well, so I have nothing more to say, only that I wish their love will lasts forever!

Po dlhom čase pridávam pár svadobných fotiek. Krásny mladý pár, moji milí dobrovoľníci z festivalu Hory a Mesto, ma poprosili o nafotenie ich svadby a tak som mala tú česť byť pri tom. Fotili sme v račianskom lese a vo vinohradoch v hroznom teple. Nevesta bola nádherná a ženích tiež a ja vlastne nemám čo dodať, len nech im tá láska vydrží navždy!

Summer diaries VI. - Biele Vody - One very special lady

I am sure most of you are already in a Christmas mood, shopping for presents, baking and checking the weather forecast whether there will be white Christmas this year.... But I have to go back to Biele Vody in the middle of the summer in this post. My friend I told you about last time, who owns that wonderful cottage there, has also a wonderful grandmother. She is one lively, intelligent, friendly and nice old lady, and she is definitely worth the mention! One special lady! She parties hard till the morning with his friends, dances with her grandson, chats with you, is interested in a lot of things and always has a great smile on. She is (simply said) unbelievable a we were lucky enough to spent the afternoon with her before going back home. She and the cottage - that is a great combination, and it was great just to sit and chat with her there. In the moments like these, you realize you do not need anything more in life but a great company and a roof over your head in case of bad weather... I like her a lot!
On the way back I had a short encounter with a cow and I realized, I have a great respect for this animal...or better to say a fear...
Then just the last glimpse down the valley and off we went...


Je mi jasné, že väčšina z vás je už vo vianočnej nálade, pečie, zháňa darčeky a sleduje predpoveď počasia, či nám aspoň troška nasneží... Ale ja sa ešte na chvíľu vrátim na Biele Vody uprostred leta.  Ten môj kamarát, ktorý tam má túto úžasnú chalúpku, má totiž aj úžasnú babku. Jednu čipernú, múdru, kamarátsku a skvelú babku, ktorá rozhodne stojí za zmienku! Je to špeciálna dáma! Ona totiž so svojím vnukom tancuje, s mladými sa zabáva do rána, diskutuje, živo sa zaujíma o veci, jednoducho je neuveriteľná a my sme mali to šťastie s ňou stráviť naše popoludnie pred odchodom domov. Ona a jej chalúpka spolu neskutočne ladia a bolo skvelé si tam len tak posedieť a podebatovať. V takých chvíľach si človek uvedomí, že k životu netreba prakticky nič, len dobrú spoločnosť a strechu nad hlavou v prípade nepriazne počasia... Mám ju veľmi rada.
Cestou domov som si šla ešte pohladkať kravu a zistila som, že mám pred ňou veľký rešpekt. Teda takmer až strach...
Potom už len posledný pohľad na krásne údolie a šlo sa domov.
