5 for friday from Iceland

I am announcing a little break from 5 for friday for a couple of weeks. I will wait for the missing pictures so I can document everything how this beautiful country deserves. Meanwhile, I will be posting other stuff so stay tuned :-).

Have a great weekend and get outside!

Pekný víkend želám a vypadnite do prírody!

5 for friday from Iceland

From Husavík we drove to one of most popular tourist areas on Iceland around Mývatn lake. The lake and surroundings are protected national preserves, famous for the rich fauna and diversity. Mývatn (translated as midge lake) is located near famous Krafla volcano. Close to Mývatn you can find beautiful lava pillars, formations called Dimmuborgir (see picture below), pseudocraters (see picture above), geothermal area Hverarond (next 2 pictures), craters such as Viti crater (last picure)... there is definitely a lot to see for more than one day. Pictures from this day stayed unfortunately in my cousin´s computer in Iceland, so here is just a handfull which made it to Slovakia. Maybe later I will post more.
Have a beautiful weekend!

5 for friday from Iceland

Husavík. Harbour town. I imagined a long wide promenade by the sea, where you can find at least 10 companies offering whale watching trips. I could not imagine finding them and I literally felt the pulsing vibes of this town. Well after a phone call with my cousin I found out that there are just two companies and it really won´t be problem to find them. When we arrived, there was really not much of pulsing life in there. It was just a small fishing village with few houses hidden in fog. Oh an the FOG! Quite a problem when you are in town famous for views of huge mountains rising right above the sea and in front of this scenery there are whales swimming around. We could barely see 2 metres in front and the mountains ...well, we just imagined them. We hesitated a lot whether it´s worth going on sea in this weather, but we decided to give it a try and not to wait - the weather could get even worse and it was not worth stay in Husavík for more than one day waiting for sun. So we went. We bought a 3-hour trip (there was also a 4-hour with a de-tour to a cliff full of puffins, but we figured out it is too foggy to see up the cliff). We put on warm overalls 10 times bigger than our sizes and the boat went on the sea. Thank God they were right and the fog on the sea was much thinner. So we didn´t see the mountains, but definitely could see further than 2 meters. Ok, let´s make this story short. First hour was fine, but soooo boring. We saw nothing. Then few dolphins. And then finally a whale. But in that time, I got sea sick. Yes, I got distracted for a while and was shooting whales in excitement, even when I was thrown from side to side by huge waves. But after a while I got so sick, that even with a whale swimming around the boat, I went to a tiny toilet and puked the rest of the trip. I felt really sick and even the shouts coming from outside about another whales approaching our boat didn´t force me to leave the bathroom. I thanked God when I could step on the ground after 3 hours. So this was Husavík story. But I would do it again. The whales are worth it.

No a hmla! Skrátim to. Prvá hodina v pohode, ale nudáááá. Nikde nič. Potom pár delfínov. A potom konečne veľryba. Ale šla by som určite znova. Tie veľryby za to stoja.

5 for friday from Iceland

I know, I didn´t post my regular series for two weeks now, once because of Easter and once because I was too busy. Today, I am also posting it without any long story. I am sick and I do not feel really well, so I leave you here with just a short description:  This is the way in the north of Iceland, getting close to Husavík, the town famous for whale watching. On the route there we stopped to see another beautiful waterfall, Godafoss. The weather was not pleasant at all, so this is all I got...

5 for friday from Iceland -invitation to an exhibition

Because this week I have been busy working on this film festival, instead of posting 5 new photos for friday, let me just invite you to come to Aupark to see my small photo exhibition from Iceland there. We are there until Sunday night and the programme is definitely one you should not miss! Come to get an out-of-daily-life inspiration! Have a great weekend!

5 for friday from Iceland

Maybe you find this picture above boring, but it has a story. It is a view from a holy mountain called  Helgafell. This holy mountain is a small, 73 meters high hill (see the picture below). According to a legend, the mountain has a magic power and those, who climb up and keep to some rules, may have three wishes and those will come true. You have to climb up  the southwest side to the ruins, you can not talk and neither look back. You have to wish only for good things and your heart must be honest. You have to climb down the east side to the grave of Gudrun and you can never tell your wishes to anyone. So we did it, we silently climbed the hill, never looked back and climbed down to the grave of Gudrun. So we will see what happens.  But even if I want, I can not tell you what I wished for, because I do not remember it anymore.
The other photos are just shots taken from car, a shipwrack and a smiling sun.

5 for friday from Iceland

As soon as I noticed this mountain on a horizon, I was amazed and could not wait to get closer to it. It has a perfect shape and looks like a green  pyramid! I looked it in the travel guide immediately, it is called Kirkjufell. It´s a pity that weather wasn´t that great, could be a different story on a bright sunny day. We made a quick stop to take a photo and rushed away.
I learned before, that the typical islandic speciality is meat from a carious (is this the right word for that?) shark called hákarl. I know, it doesn´t sound apetizing, but you should always try local specialities if you are able to. I read about the farm, where they prepare this meat, but I didn´t know we will be passing by. Of course, when I saw this shark statue, we couldn´t miss the opportunity. We drove long long way in eternity, and at the end we found a  house, not different from any other. Except there was a huge dead shark in the carriage in front of the house. Inside there was a museum full of stuff connected to this yummy food. there were shark skins, fishing boat, harpoons, different stuffed sea animals and so on. There were also containers with hákarl pieces. This speciality is eaten with dark bread. It smells like ammonia or some kind of strong cleanser, but it is not that bad. Shark meat is placed in a shallow hole and covered with sand for several weeks or months and then it dries outside, hanging in pieces at roof covered bars little up the hill from the museum. If you happened to be around, definitely don't miss it!

Ak pôjdete okolo, určite si to nenechajte ujsť!

5 for friday from Iceland

We didn´t even leave Arnarstapi and we had to stop, because we noticed a strange stone monument far away at the end of a plateau. It is called Lóndrangar. So we walked to it to see it closer. It´s actually two basalt pillars, the higher one reaching 75 meters. They are right above the sea, so wind over there is blowing like crazy.

Few kilometers further we stopped again. This place is called Dritvík and Djúpalón. Here you can find a beach with beautifully round shaped lava stones. Four of them of different sizes are used for testing your strenght. The smalleste is called Bungler and weights 23 kg, the biggest is called Full strenght and weights 154 kg. Besides this, there is a bay, where in 1948 a British ship was wrecked, and all around the shore there are red coloured - rusted pieces of the ship. They are kept here as a memento and you should not take them with you as a souvenir.

And again few kilometers further and some detour you run into a Golden beach. The sand (or better to say tiny stones) are golden coloured. You feel the urge to take of your clothes and run to the sea and completely forget that you are in Iceland.

No a ešte o pá kilometrov ďalej a istej zachádzke narazíte na tzv.

5 for friday from Iceland

Some more pics from Arnarstapi next morning. I love this place! Notice the small figure on the third picture at the edge of the hole.

Niekoľko daľších fotiek z Arnarstapi z druhého dňa. Milujem to miesto!

5 for friday from Iceland

These pictures are taken around midnight, when we arrived to Arnarstapi. Because this is the darkest it gets in the summertime, we often arrived to places in such late hours not ralizing it and we were worried we will find no place to stay. Apparently people in Iceland do not sleep in the summer, because there was no problem arriving that late.
Arnarstapi is a former fishing village on the southwest part of Snæfellsnes penisula. You can get there through a long tunnel, which runs below the sea level. We didn´t do any stops on the way to Arnarstapi, because we were trying to arrive in some decent hour. But if you would be stopping in Iceland everywhere, where you think it´s beautiful, you probably wouldn´t get too far.
For me this detour to penisula and the stop in Arnarstapi was one of the most beautiful places in Iceland. Maybe it was because the magic of this blue "night". It seemed we arrived to completely abandoned area, nobody around, just pure nature. it was a shame that the weather got worse the next day, because it would be heaven on earth in the sunlight.
From Arnarstapi, you can make a trip up to an inactive volcano Snæfell. Its icy top Snæfellsjökull is a gate to the middle of Earth in a book of Jules Verne, A journey to the center of the Earth. We did not take that journey, because it would cost us a day of time. This place is also famous for an arctic weather a the wind was blowing like crazy that day, so maybe next time.

Tieto fotky su robené  okolo polnoci, ked sme dorazili do Arnarstapi.

5 for friday from Iceland

Today I am posting just five imagiges from the road towards Snaefelsnes (and I am not 100%  sure if all of them are from there...).  Next week look forward to one of my favourite parts of Iceland, even not planned. The weather changed our original plan to continue throught the south part to the east side of Iceland. Forecast showed the weather will be pretty bad, so we decided to turn around an take the north road to east. I am not sure if the weather was better than in the south, but we definitely went to the penisula Snaefellsnes only thanks to this change of the plans.

5 for friday from Iceland

Pingvellir (Thingvellir) is the most important place in icelandic history, because in 930 a parliament (Althing) was established here. The crevise between Europe and North America is most visible here. This place was chosen thanks to great acoustics, the relief and because it was close to many settlements. It became also the first national park in Iceland, and really, you can have as many walks and trips here as you like. To get there, you are crossing a huge plateau and it doesn´t seem that you are approaching one of the most important stops in Iceland. The surroundings, even the place itself doesn´t take your breath away like many others things in Iceland do, but it has its magic, a soul...There is something about Thingvellir!
